Botanical Description

Crepis capillaris, the smooth hawk's-beard, is a slender annual or biennial herb of the daisy family, 15 to 90 cm tall, with a basal rosette and a branched, often reddish, more or less smooth stem. The basal leaves are lance-shaped and deeply pinnately lobed or toothed, narrowing to a winged stalk, while the smaller stem leaves clasp the stem with pointed, arrow-shaped bases. The inflorescence is a loose, branched cluster of numerous small, dandelion-like flower heads, each composed entirely of bright yellow strap-shaped ray florets, the outer ones sometimes reddish beneath. The involucral bracts are downy and glandular. The fruit is a small ribbed achene bearing a tuft of soft white hairs. Native to Europe and naturalized widely, smooth hawk's-beard is a common weed of grassland, lawns, roadsides, waste ground, and other open habitats.
