Botanical Description

Dillwynia glaberrima, commonly known as smooth parrot-pea, is a small evergreen shrub in the family Fabaceae endemic to south-eastern Australia, where it grows in heath, dry sclerophyll forest and coastal scrub from New South Wales through Victoria to Tasmania. It is an erect or somewhat spreading shrub typically 0.3 to 1.5 meters tall, with slender wiry hairless branches. The leaves are alternate, narrowly linear and almost terete, 5 to 15 millimeters long, with a small mucronate tip. From late winter through summer it produces clusters of showy pea-flowers at the ends of branches; each flower has a yellow standard petal usually marked with red veining or a red blotch, and a red to purplish keel, giving the genus its common name 'eggs and bacon.' The fruit is a small inflated ovoid pod containing one or two seeds.
