Botanical Description

Eucalyptus pauciflora is a small to medium tree, occasionally a mallee, of the family Myrtaceae, typically reaching 20 to 30 metres in height with a lignotuber. The bark is smooth throughout, white, grey, cream or yellow, often patterned with insect scribbles, and sheds in long ribbons to reveal fresh paler surfaces beneath. Juvenile leaves are opposite for several pairs before becoming alternate, dull bluish-green to glaucous, broadly lanceolate to ovate, 4 to 10 centimetres long. Adult leaves are alternate, thick, lance-shaped to slightly curved or elliptical, 60 to 200 millimetres long and 12 to 50 millimetres wide, glossy green to grey-green with parallel longitudinal veins. Flower buds are arranged in axillary umbels of seven to fifteen, on a flattened peduncle, opening from October to February to creamy white flowers. The fruit is a woody, cup-shaped, conical or hemispherical capsule 5 to 11 millimetres long. The species dominates subalpine and montane woodlands above roughly 700 metres in the ranges and tablelands of south-eastern Australia, tolerating heavy frost and snow.
