Botanical Description
Festuca heterophylla, the shade or various-leaved fescue, is a densely tufted perennial grass of the Poaceae family native to southern and central Europe and naturalised in scattered locations in Asia and North America. The plant forms compact tussocks of two markedly different leaf types, the diagnostic character behind both its common and specific names: the basal leaves are very fine, hair-like, inrolled, and dark green, while the leaves of the flowering culms are flat, broader, and softer. The erect, slender culms reach sixty to ninety centimetres tall and bear in early summer a narrow, slightly nodding panicle eight to fifteen centimetres long, with short branches carrying lanceolate, three- to five-flowered spikelets. The lemmas are tipped with a short awn. The species favours light shade in deciduous woodland, woodland margins, and partly shaded grassy banks on moderately fertile soils.
