Botanical Description

Hedlundia mougeotii is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree (occasionally a tall shrub) of the Rosaceae family typically 5-15 m tall, with a rounded or somewhat irregular crown and smooth greyish bark that becomes shallowly fissured with age. The young twigs are slightly pubescent and reddish-brown. Buds are ovoid, brownish, with sparsely pubescent scales. The leaves are alternate, simple, broadly elliptic to obovate, 6-10 cm long and 4-7 cm wide, with a short petiole 1-2 cm long; the margin is doubly serrate to shallowly lobed in the upper third, with 8-12 pairs of lateral veins; the upper surface is dark green and nearly glabrous, the lower surface densely covered in fine whitish-grey tomentum. The inflorescence is a flat-topped terminal corymb 5-10 cm across bearing numerous small white five-petalled flowers about 12 mm in diameter, each with about 20 stamens and two to three styles; the corymb axis and pedicels are densely tomentose. The fruit is a small subglobose pome 9-12 mm in diameter, ripening bright orange-red, with persistent calyx lobes and a mealy yellowish flesh enclosing two to four small seeds. Endemic to the Vosges, Jura and adjacent western Alps of central Europe on rocky calcareous slopes and montane forest margins.
