Botanical Description
Juglans regia is a long-lived deciduous tree in the Juglandaceae family reaching 25-35 m tall with a broad spreading crown and smooth grey bark that becomes deeply furrowed with age. It is native to a broad arc from the Balkans through Central Asia to the western Himalayas and southwestern China and is cultivated worldwide for its edible kernels. The leaves are pinnately compound, 25-40 cm long, with 5-9 large aromatic ovate leaflets that release a characteristic resinous scent when crushed. The tree is monoecious, with pendant male catkins and small inconspicuous terminal female flowers borne in spring. The fruit is a drupe-like nut: a green fleshy husk surrounds a hard wrinkled bony shell enclosing the convoluted two-lobed edible seed (the walnut kernel) used as Hu Tao Ren in Chinese medicine.
