It forms by the hydrothermal alteration of magnesium-rich rocks such as serpentinite and dolomite and is among the softest known minerals, rated 1 on the Mohs hardness scale. Talc crystallizes in the monoclinic system, typically occurring as compact, foliated, or massive aggregates with a characteristic greasy, soapy feel and a pearly to dull luster. Colors range from white to pale green, gray, or yellowish. The medicinal grade used in East Asian herbalism is selected for purity, then washed, levigated, and dried to produce a fine, soft, odorless white powder.
