Botanical Description
Hyoseris radiata, the perennial hyoseris, is a low rosette-forming perennial herb in the daisy family (Asteraceae), native to the Mediterranean Basin from Portugal and Spain through southern France, Italy, the Balkans, and the islands to Greece, North Africa, and the Levant. The plant produces a stout taproot from which arises a flat basal rosette of leaves 10-30 cm across; the leaves are oblanceolate in outline, deeply pinnatifid or runcinate with backward-pointing triangular lobes, glabrous to sparsely hairy, and slightly fleshy. From the rosette emerge several leafless, often slightly curved scapes 10-30 cm tall, each bearing a solitary terminal capitulum 2-4 cm across. The flowering heads contain only ligulate florets, bright golden-yellow, opening in sunshine and closing in the afternoon; the involucre is cylindrical to campanulate with two rows of bracts, the inner row enlarging and becoming spongy at the base in fruit. Achenes are dimorphic โ the outer ones enclosed by the inner bracts and pappus-less, the inner with a pappus of plumose scales. The species grows on stony slopes, garrigue, old walls, and roadsides.
