Botanical Description

Poa sieberiana, the grey tussock-grass or snow grass, is a slender, long-lived perennial bunchgrass of the Poaceae family endemic to Australia, where it occurs widely across south-eastern states from Queensland through New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory south to Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. The plant forms loose to fairly dense tufts of fine, narrow, often inrolled basal leaves twenty to fifty centimetres long, generally smooth and ranging from green to a glaucous pale grey-blue depending on conditions and variety. The flowering culms rise thirty to ninety centimetres tall and bear in late spring and summer open, much-branched, pyramidal panicles ten to thirty centimetres long, the slender branches carrying small, several-flowered, often purple-tinged spikelets. The species is a common, palatable component of native temperate grasslands and lightly wooded forest floors.
