Botanical Description

Potentilla neglecta is a perennial herb of the Rosaceae family, a member of the silver cinquefoil (P. argentea) aggregate, standing 15-40 cm tall from a slender woody rootstock. The flowering stems are ascending to decumbent, slender, often reddish, and clothed in a mixture of long spreading and shorter appressed white hairs. The leaves are alternate, palmately compound with five (rarely seven) narrowly oblong-obovate leaflets 1.5-3 cm long and 4-10 mm wide; each leaflet is sharply pinnately lobed in the upper half with revolute margins, dark green and shortly pubescent on the upper surface, and densely covered beneath by a white felt of stellate and silky tomentum that gives the foliage its characteristic silvery appearance. Stipules at the base of the leaves are lanceolate and membranous. The inflorescence is a loose terminal cyme of several to many small flowers on slender pedicels. Each flower is 8-12 mm across, with five spreading bright pale-yellow obovate petals slightly exceeding the five lanceolate sepals and the five narrow epicalyx segments. Numerous stamens surround a small central head of free carpels. The fruit is an aggregate of small smooth ovoid achenes about 1 mm long borne on a dry hairy receptacle. Native to dry sandy or gravelly grasslands, heaths and road verges across central and northern Europe.

Native Region: Baltic States, Bulgaria, Central European Rus, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Krym, North European Russi, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, Yugoslavia
