Botanical Description

Rosa squarrosa is a deciduous shrub of the rose family Rosaceae, belonging to the taxonomically complex Caninae section of European wild roses (the dog roses). It is found in central and southern Europe in scrub, hedgerows and woodland margins. Plants form arching, multi-stemmed shrubs reaching 1 to 3 metres in height, the stems armed with stout, broad-based, hooked prickles. Leaves are odd-pinnate with usually five to seven ovate to elliptic leaflets bearing compound (double or glandular) serrate margins โ€” a distinguishing feature within the section. The leaflets are typically glabrous or only sparsely hairy on the underside. Solitary or few-flowered inflorescences bear pink or pale pink five-petaled flowers about 3 to 5 centimetres across with numerous yellow stamens. Fruits are ovoid to subglobose red hips, smooth or sparsely glandular, ripening in autumn and persisting into winter.
