Botanical Description
Rubus pedemontanus is a European bramble in the family Rosaceae, currently treated as a junior synonym of Rubus nigricans in some authorities. It is a low, arching subshrub with biennial canes typical of the genus, armed with slender, often curved prickles. The pinnate leaves usually carry three to five leaflets, with toothed margins and tomentose undersides; in autumn the foliage often turns dark and the canes acquire a dark, almost blackish hue that gives rise to the epithet nigricans. White to pale-pink five-petalled flowers are borne in small terminal panicles in early summer, followed by black, multi-drupelet aggregate fruits typical of the brambles. The species occurs in mountainous and submontane parts of Europe, including the Alps, Pyrenees and parts of the British Isles, growing in woodland margins, hedgerows, scrub and rocky slopes.
