Botanical Description
Scandosorbus intermedia (long known as Sorbus intermedia), the Swedish whitebeam, is a medium-sized deciduous tree in the family Rosaceae growing 10โ20 m tall, with a rounded dome-shaped crown and stout horizontal branches. The trunk is typically up to about 60 cm in diameter, occasionally much larger, and bears smooth grey bark. The simple alternate leaves are 7โ12 cm long and 5โ7 cm broad, dark green and nearly hairless above but densely clothed with pale grey-white hairs beneath, and have four to seven oval, shallowly toothed lobes on each side; they turn dull yellowish to grey-brown in autumn. In late spring the tree produces broad, flat-topped corymbs 8โ12 cm across of fragrant white flowers 15โ20 mm in diameter, each with five petals and about twenty yellowish-white stamens. The fruit is an oval orange-red to red pome 15 mm long ripening in mid-autumn, eaten by birds. Native to southern Sweden and adjacent regions of the Baltic, it is widely planted as a tough, urban-tolerant street tree across northern Europe.
