Botanical Description

Shu Gui Hua refers in most sources to the flowers of Osmanthus fragrans (Oleaceae), an evergreen shrub or small tree 3โ€“12 m tall native to southern China and cultivated widely for its intensely fragrant blossoms. Leaves are opposite, leathery, elliptic-oblong, 7โ€“15 cm long, with finely serrate or entire margins and a glossy dark green upper surface. The minute, four-lobed, tubular flowers are 5โ€“6 mm across, creamy white to pale yellow or apricot, borne in dense axillary cymose clusters in autumn, and exhale a powerful apricot-like perfume. Fruits are bluish-black ovoid drupes about 1 cm long, rarely set in cultivation.
