Botanical Description

Tripleurospermum maritimum (sea mayweed, false mayweed) is a procumbent to weakly ascending biennial or short-lived perennial herb of the daisy family (Asteraceae), with sprawling, fleshy, much-branched stems 10–80 cm long that grow along the ground before curving upward toward their tips. The alternate leaves are 2–6 cm long and pinnately to bipinnately divided into narrow, fleshy, somewhat succulent, terete (cylindrical) ultimate segments—an adaptation to the salt-laden maritime habitat. From June to October the plant produces solitary, long-stalked, daisy-like flower heads 3–5.5 cm across, each with about 12–25 spreading white ray florets surrounding a broad domed disc of bright yellow tubular florets, and unlike the closely related scentless mayweed the foliage is essentially unscented. The fruit is a small triangular achene 1.8–3.5 mm long with three prominent pale ribs, ranging in colour from pale to blackish-brown. Native to coasts of northern Europe including all of Scandinavia and the British Isles, parts of mainland Europe, Greenland, and the Azores, it grows on shingle beaches, sea-walls, drift-lines, salt marshes, and disturbed coastal waste ground.

Native Region: Azores, Baltic States, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Føroyar, Germany, Great Britain, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Netherlands, Northwest European R, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden
